RE: RV PARKING PROBLEM IN NEPTUNE N.J.

There is no sidewalk, and it is about 10 feet from the curbline. I got a copy of the zoning ordinance and one section prohibits rvs, boats, or trailers stored or parked in front of the building line, another section on driveways says; 1 RV, less than 40 foot long, properly registeded with DMV, may be parked in a driveway. Sounds conflicting to me! Sounds like you need to go have a chat with Code Enforcement. FWIW, we have the same type of ordinance here, without the confusion. Here, if the RV is in front of the house, it has to be on a driveway or other prepared surface (aka, you can't park it on the grass in the front yard) and it has to be at least 15 feet off the curb (out of the street easment).

RE: fifth wheel that can be pulled by 1/2 ton pickup

Your trailer is the exception and for good towing, you want the hitch/pinbox toward the heavier side. When we were towing the 5er, loaded were about 13,800# and a pin weight of a bit over 2800#. This put us a bit over 20% for the pin weight. I really don't think it's an exception in modern trailers. On most single slide 5er's, the slide is close to centered over the axles, making the trailer heavier without adding hitch weight. This also allows the manufacturer to add a bedroom slide to the floorplan (as either and option or a different model) without getting too heavy on the hitch. When we bought, the trailer we really wanted was a Cedar Creek Silverback bunkhouse, but it was too heavy on the hitch. The only major difference between that trailer and my Cherokee is the absence of a bedroom slide on my trailer. They are the exact same floorplan and dimensions except for that one slide.

RE: fifth wheel that can be pulled by 1/2 ton pickup

This just goes to show you advertised hitch weights are bogus, most of these hitch weights are under 20% when empty, some of know how to do math, many do not! I think you and TXIceman need to do some more research....most 5er's out there with super slides in the living area and no bedroom slide are closer to 15% pin weight than 20%. The trailer in my signature weighs 9500# wet and ready for a week with 1400# on the pin (yes, verified on a CAT scale).

RE: skylight in the shower

We close the room divider curtain at night before going to bed. :) We would do that too, but the AC and heat vents end up on the other side of the curtain. We have a piece of Reflctix velcroed up there for now, but the velcro is starting to peel off the skylight frame after a couple of years, so I might try a couple of these other methods of hanging it.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Richard, I'm really sorry to hear about Old Fella. He has a tremendous ball faddish. When he first came into the house he found one of Suzie’s tennis balls. He brought it to me and we have been playing ball ever since, he doesn’t get enough of it. Last night he brought me every ball he could find in the toy box and placed them at my feet. He's a Lab.....wanting to play ball is genetic.

RE: Bark Collar?

Used properly, e-collars can be very effective training tools. Used wrong, they can really hurt a dog. They don't need to be turned up to extreme pain levels to work if the human knows what they're doing.

RE: Jake - Questions

Jake is a good looking pup. On his jumping issue, try this....if his butt isn't planted on the ground, he doesn't get petted. If he jumps up, push him off and put him in a sit/stay, then pet. If he stands, stop immediately and put him back into the sit. He'll get the idea pretty quick...

RE: New Puppy and getting him used to RV'ing Advice Please

Before you take your pup camping, check the stairs on your RV....if they have drain holes in the treads, wrap them with indoor outdoor carpet before you let the pup use them. Dogs can get their toenails caught in those holes and rip the nail right out of their foot.....

RE: HOA parking? How much time are you allowed to park your RV?

I admit I have not read all responses so this may be redundant. Your HOA can dictate parking on a city street? I thought that they could only dictate rules for the property that is commonly owned. My thought would be if the street is in fact a city street, the parking rules of the city apply. Yes, they can. It is a covenant that goes with the property when purchased. The only way the HOA can enforce parking rules on city property (aka, the street) is if it is written into the CCR's on the deeds for the development....otherwise, the HOA's authority probably stops at the curb. It all depends on what is written in the fine print. CCR's are attached to the lot. I don't know what it's like where any of the rest of you live, but the portion of my lot where I can do anything I want ends 15 feet off the curb and 5 feet off the property line around the other 3 sides. I'm wondering what would happen if, oh, say the city decided to come in a put in landsaping in the easements that was against the CCR's....who would win, the city, or the HOA? After all, in most places, the city can do just about whatever they want in the easements without property owner approval.

RE: HOA parking? How much time are you allowed to park your RV?

City ordinance allows 72hrs. before needing to be moved, but our precious HOA believes they can dictate who can park, and for how long they can park on a city street. If the streets are truly city owned and maintained, I think a call to the city attorney should be your next step. Our city ordinance allows parking on the property with no time limit. If it's in front of the house, it has to be on the driveway (no parking in the grass) and it has to be at least 15 feet off the street. My driveway is 46 feet from garage door to curb, my trailer is 30 feet long. I have a storage space for it about 7 miles from the house, but if we're going out multiple weekends in a row, the 5er lives in the driveway during the week.

RE: I need some emergency advice.....

Cat, it was nice and friendly for me right up to the point Susan jumped to the assumption that I wouldn't let Max sleep in the kid's rooms in his crate because he wasn't trained well enough to do it without creating a fuss. I was looking for help introducing a cat and a dog, not criticism of what was perceived to be a lack of training by someone who doesn't know me or my dog.

RE: I need some emergency advice.....

Thank you for your condescending attitude Susan....Max is crate trained very well, thankyouverymuch. I, however, don't see a point in disrupting his life any more than necessary. In or out of his crate, he's used to sleeping in a room with someone at night. It's easier for the kids to move upstairs than for me to retrain the dog to know that it's now ok to go into the kid's bedrooms again after having been trained (with an Invisible Fence) to not go into those rooms. My children's bedrooms have been off limits to him for 10 months. With or without his collar on, he knows his boundary and won't go anywhere near the door. I'm not going to change that rule for 1 week....he wouldn't understand. Mods, you can shut this thread down...I'm done.

RE: I need some emergency advice.....

I understand where you're going.....we used to have a cat, but had to send him to the shelter when he couldn't adjust to not being an only child. Another problem is that Max is used to sleeping in the same room with us (he slept with Dad just fine last year when we did this), so putting him to bed by himself would be an issue. I suppose I could just let the kids sleep upstairs in our bed while we're gone (letting Max sleep in one of their rooms isn't an option....too many things to chew up in the middle of the night).

RE: I need some emergency advice.....

Pawz, that's a good idea, but I don't think it will work in this case because I don't really have a room to spare that can just be for the cat....and I also know my kids. If we tried that, there would be at least 2 times during the week that the cat would get out of the room and then Max would go ballistic and all heck would break loose. I'd rather try to introduce them first and see if they can get along before I resort to banishing the cat to total confinement for over a week.

RE: I need some emergency advice.....

I'm not too worried about Dad handling Max....Max listens to him almost as well as he listens to me. The cat will be able to stay in the spare bedroom with dad and have the door shut, so separating them when needed isn't a problem. I just know Max, and he is going to be real excited to have a new toy that hopefully plays back. If he gets too worked up, it'll be kennel time until he cools down. Luckily, temps are supposed to moderate over the next few days and into next week so Max can have plenty of outdoor time to work off excess energy.

RE: I need some emergency advice.....

Neutral territory is not an option right now, unfortunately.....it's not even going to get above 0 today and windchills are running in the -20 to -30 range, making it unwise to spend enough time outside to make it worthwile.

I need some emergency advice.....

We (SWMBO and I) are leaving for a cruise on Sunday. My dad is coming to stay with Max and the kids. The problem is that my dad wasn't able to find anyone to watch an abandoned kitten that he found about 4 months ago, so he's bringing the cat with him. I just found out that Dad and the cat will be here this afternoon (he's travelling a day early to beat some weather). The last time Max saw a cat, he was less than 7 weeks old (he's now 1-1/2 years). Evidently, this cat is also a little terror, as most kittens are. Somebody give me a game plan for how to introduce these two....pleeeeaaaase....

RE: fire starter

I have used this in all seasons to light a fire: Save your dyer lint Save your cardboard egg cartons Buy some paraffin wax Put the wax in a small coffee can and melt it on the stove or some other “SAFE” heat source. Take your lint and fill as tight as you can in to each of the egg cradles and then pour in the wax. Let wax harden Cut with a hand saw the cradles up into separate pieces. Keep them in a zip lock bag with a couple of strike anywhere matches These fire starters will last about 20 minutes and I have used them hundreds of times to start a fire and they have never failed me yet. Best thing to have in your pocket when your in the bush. I was taught this by an O’ll trapper guy my dad new except he used old rags that he had rubbed against an old cheese grater instead of the lint. Soup Safest way to melt the wax is with a double boiler....I use an empty veggie can in a pan of boiling water.

The day any elected official "hangs up" on me is the day I start a recall petition. Any day an elected official uses his/her position to attempt to settle a personal vendetta with me is the day I start a recall petition.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Max uses a Gentle Leader when we go out (very similar to the Halti)....it is in no way a muzzle. He can open his mouth fully while wearing it, unless he's pulling on his leash. I could adjust it to be a muzzle, but when adjusted properly, it doesn't restrain the jaw at all.
